50+ Things You Need to Know
Joe stood in the elevator literally pushing up and down off the balls of his feet. Every time the elevator stopped to add more passengers or let some off, he became more visibly distraught. Finally the car reached his floor. He pushed out the door as fast as he could running down the hallway like he was being chased by rabid dogs! He charged into the office, skidding through the maze of cubicles until reaching his own where he flopped down into his chair. He remained seated while removing his jacket and hastily logged on to his terminal all the while hoping no one noticed that he was late . . . again!
Now Joe is a very likable fellow. He gets along with all of his co-workers. The same co-workers who managed to arrive at work on time. His excuses for tardiness, however, are beginning to wear thin even with his friends. He’d already been warned twice before and he knew that he stood to be penalized with a reduction in pay (or worse) if he didn’t get it under control. I think we can all relate somewhat to Joe. Everybody has an occasional emergency situation where they just can’t avoid a late appointment or other situation.
The problem occurs when the behavior becomes habitual. And, you would be amazed at just how often that happens every day in the workplace. How about the social scene? Joe has been invited to join family or even a group of friends for dinner at a nice restaurant. Everyone but him arrived at the allotted time. As a courtesy they waited for before ordering meals….and waited….and waited. Sound familiar? Again, an occasional tardiness can be overlooked. But when it becomes a habitual situation Joe may find himself excluded from gatherings with friends or co-workers. Family finally “gets it” and just starts without him.
Joe is finding his social life has dwindled down to just about nothing. No one invites him because they know his pattern of behavior. It’s sad really, because it could all be resolved with just a little bit of effort. It does make one wonder, however, how he ever got through school with his extensive tardiness. If you can relate to Joe at all, you really owe yourself a checkup from the neck up. There is help available!
